30 January 2007

Can't get it out of my head now ...

This song's playing over and over in my head now. It's funny how some tunes invade your mind and take over.

In my case, once a tune invades, it stays there for a good time. I'd be whistling it sometimes. I'll sing it when I drive. I'll play it in my head in the gym. I'll put myself to sleep with it. It just doesn't stop until another tune takes over. The previous tune before this was Leslie Cheung's 追. Doesn't sound like me to listen to Chinese songs, eh? =P

Since I can't stop it, maybe I can infect you with it ... =)

Of course, you'd need to know chinese first =P

KL-HN-KL

I'll be on the road again this week.

Hanoi, for work this time. I doubt I'll enjoy Hanoi as a work destination. Holidays always bring the best out of a city, but work, well, it exposes the underbelly of big corporation. And work is work is work is work.

I believe access to blogger / blogspot might be restricted in Vietnam, so blogging is really depending on whether I get access to the blog in the first place. But if the trip lives up to the itinerary, I'm kind of sure there won't be too much to blog. Maybe the ocassional rants.

And for once, I'll be missing my dose of sunshine. =(

Wish me luck, people. This is not an easy roadtrip.

Meme: Top 5 favorite movies

Che-cheh must have noticed the lack of inspiration lately in my blogs, and decided to do something about it. She's tagged me for a simple meme - listing my Top 5 Favorite Movies.

I'll have to put this disclaimers:

My deprived childhood (yeah, I was a child laborer, and was forced to peddle DVDs and sell lottery tickets - NOT) meant that I didn't quite watch a lot of movies. But that's the easy to understand part. The hard to understand part is that in my adulthood (which is still hotly disputed - some people think my IQ is that of an 8 year old boy), I still don't watch many movies. That's because I sometimes boycott cinemas, sometimes the cinema boycott me, and I sometimes buy the DVD but never watch the movie. Please don't question the reason(s) for my miserable living conditions. It's depressing enough to live it, don't make me answer for it too.

Having said that, I do have many favorite movies, and when asked to mention my top movies, depending on the mood, I'll list out different ones. So for this meme, I'm feeling a little inspired, calm, and content. Based on this mood, here's my list of favorite movies ...

Phantom Lover (Cantonese, Leslie Cheung & Jacqueline Wu)

Based loosely on the Romeo and Juliet, this movie is a favorite for sentimental reasons - the soundtrack. It reintroduced me to Leslie Cheung, and got me to rediscover this icon of Hong Kong entertainment industry. The acting's not too bad, and the plot's a little predictable. It's all about Leslie Cheung and his singing.

And the way they do the flashbacks in black and white ... and then the scenes in the present in color. It's interesting to me because it's the first time I've seen that done in a movie.

Disclaimer though, I'm interested in Leslie Cheung's acting and singing. Not Leslie Cheung himself hor.

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks)

This damn movie touched me. Made me cry in the cinema. Made me believe an unbelievable story line. And I don't understand why. Even today. I'm still trying to understand why I'm so touched, but I think it's the story, as unbelievable as it is. Tom Hanks can just sell you the most unlikely story, can't he?

I remember playing the theme from this movie on the piano and imagining a feather slowly making its way to me (just like in the opening scene). And I'll always remember the running scene, where Forrest was running against a stunning background - that of a beautiful snow capped mountain reflected on a lake - with the commentary that goes - "and where you can't tell where heaven ends and earth begins" - or something to that effect. *tsk*

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Don't tell me you don't know about this?)

We all know about this. I enjoy the movie because of its epic production and the well done story telling. It's nowhere as good as the book, but it's a pretty good rendition of it. Plus, the acting's not bad at all.

The Rock (Nic Cage, Sean Connery)

How can you beat this for pure action? The storyline sucks. The plot is implausible. You know the good guy, who's a geek, will kick ass in the end. You know the old man, a prisoner, will be free as well. So ... why watch this one then?

You watch it because you want shootouts! You want explosions! You want bombs! You want fight scenes! It doesn't hurt that you get Sean Connery in it. He's the reason why I look forward to aging. Who knows? Maybe I'll look better when I'm older. Hope springs eternal !!!

Storm Riders (Cantonese, Aaron Kwok, Ekin Cheng, Shu Qi)

Ok, Chinese comic book buffs - you can come out from hiding !!! This is the movie adaptation of the chinese comic of the same title. I've had fantasies of being one of the two heroes in this wuxia movie - Cloud or Wind. Hehe ... given a choice, I'd like to be Cloud - more moody lah - like my alter ego.

The acting is no good. The action is not too bad. The special effects are good by HK standards. The best part about this movie is when the Sword Saint (played by Anthony Wong), appeared - the audience actually laughed - but he's supposed to be a serious character ... so farnie !!! But his fight scene with Sony Chiba's Lord Conqueror is actually pretty good - the one where all the people in the hall freezes.

OK ...

So now, you've heard my Top Top Favorite Favorite Movies. In the spirit of propagating mindless, entertaining memes, I'm tagging the following blog-pals.

But ...

(There's got to be a but somewhere, no?)

Because this meme is so easy ... I'm tagging with a twist :

Angeliu - I'd like to to know your Top 5 Movies with Spooning Scene. You like spooning so much, I'm sure you have your own list of spooning scenes you like ... Top 5 Spooning Scene in Movie is also acceptable. =)

Applegal - Can you share your Top 5 Court room scene in movies. You law student mah ... sure got something one ...

JL - Let's see what's your Top 5 Lame movie scene or Top 5 Lame movie ... got ah? Neh ... those lame scenes ...? Got ah ? Ok ...

Kenny Ng - This rock brader ... I wanna know what's the rock brader's Top 5 Rock Movie ?

Winn - You like to layang layang, hor? Can let us know what's your Top 5 Layang Layang movie ?

Some people are just self centered

Some people think that they are the center of their life, workplace, family, community, state, country, continent, world, and universe.

To these people, I just wanna say this: go stuff yourself.

If each one of us just thinks about other people, and how each of our action can have positive or negative impacts upon others, then the whole world will be so much better off.

You - yes, You - and you know who you are. Go stuff yourself. You're so full of yourself anyways, it shouldn't be a problem. And don't stop stuffing yourself until you realised what you've done wrong.

Hitting the wall / Wrecked with Guilt

Today, I literally hit the wall. That wall. The one you call fatigue.

Halfway through the workday today, I suddenly felt dizziness. My head felt like spinning, and while it wasn't an ache, the head wasn't quite natural at all.

I quickly grabbed a can of Coke, thinking the sugar rush would help. No help. In fact it worsened. So, I finished the immediate tasks at hand, and headed home for a quick nap. Gym can wait for another day.

I'm happy to report that it's all ok now. I'm feeling much better after a few hours of nap. And I'll be sleeping before midnight tonight as well. I think it's prudent for me to get rested now while I still have the luxury of that.

Sometimes, just when you think you can still pia, your body reminds you that you ain't in college no more. =)

*****

My parents took the other car to a wedding dinner last night, and on their way home on a very unfamiliar road, they had a very minor accident.

Good news is, no one's hurt.

Bad news is, my sister, the rightful owner of that car, is feeling hard done and had some very harsh words for my parents. I can understand she feels hard done by. I can also understand my parent's exasperation that she had reacted in such a manner. It's just people reacting to a situation differently.

The bumper, the driver side lights and the side piece on the driver side had some minor damage, and the driver side door is now having some problem opening and closing. But the car's very much ok, and the damage, in all honesty, is cosmetic.

Not for the first time, I had to step in to mediate. And that means I get to pay for the repairs, and will have to take the car for repairs, in my own time. It also means tedious negotiation with both parties - my parents, and my sister. I have to make sure no one's thinking they're at fault, and I also have to make sure everyone remains on non-yelling terms. It's interesting how some problems get resolved, and it hit me today my mediation skills at work originate in part from home.

Sometimes, I feel wrecked with guilt that our own schedules don't allow us to drive or be with our parents to wedding dinners. This is one of that sometimes.

And I'm saying this without any ill-feelings or ill-intentions: I'm really bored to death seeing my relatives getting drunk at every wedding dinner, and their little antics when they're not. Can't the elders gather without comparing how the younger youngs are doing? And wouldn't it be possible to lay off that karaoke? If it's just a civil reception with no high drama, I'd probably turn up a lot more often.

Family, what would life be without family ? =)

5 Things You Don't Know About The Monster

When the day comes when you're delighted to see yourself getting tagged to do a meme of any sort, you know it's that time of the month ... when ideas have dried up, and there isn't too much happening as well.

Angeliu tagged me, and wants to know 5 things about me that is previously unknown. Hehe ... sure ... with glee ...

Since most other bloggers who've responded to this also wrote primarily about their childhood, or at least touch the subject of childhood, I'll stick to the same topics ...

Unknown Fact #1
:
On the last day on my first year in school, I actually had a fight with some Standard 6 kids. I don't remember much, but I and some other kids in my class bashed the heck out of the Standard 6 kids. Brooms, chairs, shoes, water ... we used just about everything against them. I also recall this totally mind numbing rotan session administered by mum after that. I actually don't know how this fact would benefit you readers, but I was asked to point out things you don't know about me, right ?

Unknown Fact #2
:
As a young child, I was the naughtiest thing you can find. I think I would've smacked the little version of me if I met him today. I was every kindergarden teacher's nightmare. I was always climbing and jumping from high places. Until this one day when I fell down head first from a 1 storey high train house, and had these massive swelling on the left temple of my head. I remember the swelling went on for at least a month. And ever since that day, my climbing days were over.

Unknown Fact #3: My parents always thought I wouldn't do very well in school. We couldn't really afford tuition, and unlike other parents, my parents could not help me with my homework. Then, one day, I turned up with straight 100's on my report card in Standard 2. My mum still keep that report card. =)

Unknown Fact #4
:
Once in my uni days, me and my pals got really drunk, and we all dared each other to do silly things. I was the only one who successfully carried out my dare. And my dare? To eat 8 large, juicy, Australian watermelon. I think that's when I started to get fat ... because of the expanded tummy I got. I remember going to the toilet very often that night.

Unknown Fact #5: I used to be the straightest, most naive, and trusting person you'd ever meet. I once got ffk'ed for bowling by a girl who claimed she had to see a dentist. And I once got ffk'ed again by another girl who was supposed to come watch the Phantom of the Opera, she claimed to have forgotten it all. I guess you can also read from this unknown fact, that girls like to ffk me. For the unititiated, ffk = fong fei kei = skip a date / no show at some appointment.

So, there you have it, 5 fun, albeit unknown facts about Moz. After you've read it, I hope you are closer to knowing me better. And I hope girls will stop ffk-ing me. It's no fun anymore !!! Pleaseeeeeeee ?

As for tagging, I'd like to just tag 2 persons:
(1) Applegal - haven't seen her do a meme before.
(2) Infectioner - Ipoh boy, tell me something I don't know !!!

Tired

It's been the most tiring of all work days in a long time.

There were no crisis, no customers yelling at me, no systems going down unexplained, and the boss wasn't reading me the riot act.

Yet, today, is the most physically exhausting day I've had to endure in a long time. And you thought that people in my line of work don't have to get down and dirty ...

After a whole day of hard labour, the equipments are all in the right place. Tomorrow, I get ready to tango with cables. And figure out how to resolve the issue of power supply. But I'm glad I'm learning how to screw things together. You won't when you'll need to screw around, so it's a useful skill to have. =)

To reward the fruits of the labour, dinner was had at Vivocity's Canivore Brazilian Churrascaria. It's one of those Brazilian meat place where these waiters come around with meat in skewers and you nod if you want whatever they have. Somehow, I feel more at home with my colleagues from Singapore. Not sure if that's a sign that my career should be heading that way ...
